Using Social Media to Get Connected

I have a lot of experience with social media.  I have used several social media outlets over the last ten years.  Facebook was created when I was in college so it's exciting to be a part of that phenomenon from the beginning.  I have posted things and pictures that I regret.  Now that I am trying to establish my career and be seen as a true professional I am always worried something I posted will come back to harm my efforts.  However, I do see social media tools are helpful in getting my cause across.  I have created pages and groups that help me gain supporters and gives me the forum to relay vital information.  Even now I still create pages to get my voice heard on certain issues.  I haven't made one yet for education because I am still learning and I want to narrow down my objective.

What are your suggestions to narrowing down my efforts?  Also what are some other social media outlets can I use, besides Facebook, to get my cause out there?

  1. Hi Dawn, I am hearing that there are organization taking measures to stop employers from using information on Facebook that enables people from obtaining employment. I believe that this is an invasion of privacy and violates the 1st amendment: freedom of speech.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

  2. Dear Dawn,

I think it is interesting that you stated about starting your Facebook page while in college and being concerned about the impact on your professional career. You probably would have a lot of experience you could share with all of us older people. I first got a Facebook page when my daughter went off to college.

Do you use social media as a part of your advocacy efforts?

  3. Hi dawn!
I appreciate your sharing your Facebook experience. I have always been conservative with my fb, maybe because I was much older when I started. As for your question, I can't help a whole lot because I had the same question. I do know that you can use LinkedIn to find other like minded people. It could help with building a coalition .
